I have been a student pursuing my Masters Degree in Instructional Technology for the last year and a half. I feel this give me a great authority on what to look for and how the most relevant tools can be used in an LMS that benefit the entire learning community. My school has actually changed LMS twice since my attendance. There were features I liked and disliked about all of the systems. We are currently using CourseDen as a platform powered by Desire to Learn (http://www.desire2learn.com/). I will say so far so good with this one as it offers a lot of tools that I like and make the system very easy to use and navigate through.
As a student the most relevant features I look for in an LMS are:
- use of calendar and alerts
- feedback, faq, and support sections
- easy navigation
- simple upload system for assignments
- peer-to-peer networking ability
- support & reporting tools
- course review
- social media integration (where applicable)
- ability to build competency or certification paths
- ease of use
- tools for asynchronous and synchronous communication
All of the tools and features are essential in an online environment especially in regards to distant education as it allows the students to have accessibility to the same functionality they would in a classroom setting even though they are not physically present in a classroom.
